World Kindness Day

November | by Kirsty Kind  | #worldkindnessday

As we head into week 2 of the second lockdown (long sigh) some will be taking an opportunity to put on the brakes of life and enjoy time spent with the loved ones.

For others, lockdown is a dark cloak of uncertainty weighing heavy on the shoulders of many. It could mean anxiety about job security, concerns over the health and wellbeing but for some, it means yet another period of isolation.

Never have we needed kindness more, and today on World Kindness Day there has never been a better, more prevalent time to show compassion, kindness, and love.

The movement dates back to 1998 when it was first introduced and has gone from strength to strength. It’s a day devoted to random acts of kindness and is celebrated all across the world.

A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.

– William Arthur Ward

So many ways to make someone’s day…

Picking up the phone to a loved one instead of a text, paying someone a compliment, or donating to a food bank. There are many ways to make a difference, so many ways to make someone’s day.

For me, it was ordering my favourite cup of coffee and quietly telling the Barista to charge me twice so I could pay for the person behind me. I hop footed it out there before I could see their reaction. Strolling back to the car, carrying nothing but my drink and a smile I noticed passers-by smiling back too. The domino effect of this one random act of kindness was incredible. Knowing I could have made the slightest difference to their day was an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction and happiness. And there is science behind it! Being kind means you are less likely to be stressed, so you’ll produce less cortisol – the stress hormone! It’s a no brainer for me!

So whether it’s today, tomorrow or next week, why don’t you try it for yourself because the act of kindness itself is above all one of the kindest things you can do.

Stay safe and until next time, be kind always.
